The queen has died, the palace announces

The death of Queen Elizabeth II has marked the first change in Australia’s head of state in more than seven decades.

A statement from Buckingham Palace on Thursday (Friday morning AEST) confirmed the death of the 96-year-old.

“The Queen died peacefully in Balmoral this afternoon,” Buckingham Palace said.

“The King and The Queen Consort will remain in Balmoral tonight and return to London tomorrow.”

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor has been Queen of the United Kingdom and 14 Commonwealth kingdoms, including Australia, since her reign began in February 1952.

She will be succeeded by her son Charles, which should renew the Republican debate in Australia.
