Such is the transition between film and television that Vadhandhi – The Fable of Velonie is just the latest streaming series to find a prominent place at a major film festival.
The eight-part crime thriller in Tamil will be uploaded to Amazon Prime Video from December 2nd. However, the International Film Festival of India will first screen a special edition of the show in cinemas on November 27th.
With a title that means “rumours” in English, the series is set in a small town where nothing is as it seems. The focus is on Velonie, a beautiful debutante (portrayed by newcomer Sanjana) who is complex and mysterious with a dark backstory. Vivek, a police officer (portrayed by SJ Suryah) who is both troubled and determined, tries to cut through the layers of the city, his suspect and himself in her case. It’s not clear if he’ll be able to build a case, if he’ll identify the real culprit, or if he’ll be able to overcome his own obsessions or do so without destroying his own family.
Laila, M. Nasser, Vivek Prasanna, Kumaran and Smruthi Venkat have central roles and direct the rest of the ensemble cast.
The show is produced by writer-director duo Pushkar and Gayatri under their Wallwatcher Films banner and created by Andrew Louis. Amazon will present it in Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada language versions.
Louis and Suryah have a long and close working relationship, with Suryah working as Louis’ assistant director for seven years before taking on the lead role in Vadhandhi.
“I played a cop earlier in my career, but my character, Vivek, is exceptional. The way this case and this story is consuming him fascinates me and at the same time worries me about him,” Suryah said.
“Crime as a genre is something that brings out the art of storytelling at its rawest and most natural. With Vadhandhi – The Fable of Velonie, we aim to fully capture the audience’s imagination and challenge societal prejudice,” Pushkar and Gayatri said in a statement ahead of the screening.
The pair have an outstanding track record, including creating the Suzhal – The Vortex series and recently releasing Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan in the lead roles
Movie “Vikram Vedha”.
