The couple – both in their 20s – were sleeping inside with their three young children when they were woken up by the armed visitor.
Terrified, the woman ran to the back of the house and immediately called the police, while the gunman fled the scene.
Police visited the home but left about 20 minutes later.
The young mother then heard a loud noise that was believed to be a gunshot.
The couple went to investigate and discovered a hole through the front security door, the inner door and in the wall behind.
Detectives in a public appeal have released video surveillance of two cars believed to be in the area at the time of the incident.
Anyone who recognizes the cars or has any information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or get in touch online via www.crimestopperswa.com.au.
