The Padres get their best update yet on Fernando Tatis Jr’s injury

The San Diego Padres sit in a wildcard spot, though Fernando Tatis Jr. isn’t playing this year. That could change soon.

Fernando Tatis Jr. did not step on the rhombus at all in the 2022 season San Diego Padres. He underwent wrist surgery in March for an off-season injury and may or may not be related to his motorcycle accident in December 2021. Originally the timeline was set for a return in June, but his recovery has been much slower than expected.

Despite this, the Padres were successful. If the season ended on the All-Star break, they would be a National League wildcard team for the playoffs. However, they are in dire need of reinforcements as they have faltered a bit in the past few weeks. Luckily, Tatis could be on track to provide the needed jolt.

The Padres’ general manager, AJ Preller, appeared on a radio show in San Diego and said that Tatis started his batting progression on Friday, an important step in his rehab and on his way back to the field.

Fernando Tatis Jr injury update: The Padres star is starting to make progress

For those who don’t know, the batting progression means Tatis will swing a bat “on purpose” for the first time in his recovery. He’s made the moves with the bat before, but he’s beginning to swing in a way that would result in him doing batting practice and then going back to the batter’s box for a game.

Now it should be said that this doesn’t give a definitive timetable for Tatis’ return to the Padres line-up. There’s no telling how long it will be after he starts that swing before he makes the next move and so on.

Against this background, this is positive news. While you can’t blame a player for injury, the slow nature of his recovery was frustrating for fans, especially when the team needed something to give them a boost.

It’s not definitive and it’s not a full-blown “he’s back,” but this is a step in the right direction for Tatis and San Diego.
