The official 2022 snowstorm in Boston and some other parts of Massachusetts – CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) – The 2022 snowstorm is now official. Boston got 23.7 inches of snow on Saturday at Logan Airport, making January 29, 2022 the second-biggest January storm ever recorded in the city. It also ranks 7th on the list of all-time snowiest days in Boston’s history.

The record is still 27.6 inches, set in February 2003.

Our first snowstorm in four years was confirmed by the National Weather Service in Boston and several other areas of Massachusetts, including Worcester, Beverly, Hyannis, Marshfield and Martha’s Vineyard on Saturday afternoon.

There was also a blizzard in Providence, Westerly, Newport and Block Island in Rhode Island.

That’s not to say a blizzard didn’t happen in other locations, it certainly did. These are just locations where the National Weather Service has official recording stations (called ASOS) that have registered blizzard conditions.

To qualify, you must record visibility equal to or less than a quarter of a mile since snowfall or blowout accompanied by frequent gusts of 35 mph or more. And, all of this must go on for at least three consecutive hours.

Many NWS stations stopped reporting in the middle of a storm (possibly due to wind blowing). If that hadn’t happened, we might have recorded an official blizzard in Chatham, Falmouth, Provincetown and Smithfield, Rhode Island.

A hurricane of this magnitude does not happen very often. The last time we experienced blizzard conditions in our area was March 13, 2018.

7pm – Midnight Saturday: Snow fell at a moderate rate then morning and completely off at midnight.

If it were me, I’d wait until it’s over. May be out after 7pm There may be an inch or two more after 7pm. but you can get the majority. Or, great, stay indoors, watch a movie, and clean it up on Sunday morning! Then the wind will be much lighter and the temperature will be similar (very cold, so bundle up).

Some towns had nearly two feet or more as predicted. You can see the entire list here.

Snow was light and fluffy with fairly cold temperatures throughout the storm. The “typical” liquid-to-snow ratio in a blizzard is about 10:1, which is 10” of snow for every inch of liquid. We predict ratios close to 20:1 in this storm, very small. Attempting to measure the amount of snow would be extremely difficult because strong winds create high winds.

We will continue to update the situation as new data becomes available. We recommend paying close attention to stay safe. We’ll cover you on, WBZ-TV and CBS Boston News The official 2022 snowstorm in Boston and some other parts of Massachusetts – CBS Boston
