The Pittsburgh Steelers could look to an old divisional rival to become their next quarterback.
At the start of the new league year, the Pittsburgh Steelers made it a priority to bring in Ben Roethlisberger as a replacement. In free agency, the team signed former Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky to a two-year contract. Despite the contract, the team is still playing in quarterback, especially in the NFL Draft. But will they be able to see the open market again?
According to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, the Steelers could “seize” the chance to sign Baker Mayfield if he is cut off by the Cleveland Browns. Cabot made these comments on the Orange and Brown Talk podcast, which you can listen to at the 5:39 mark of the video below:
Can the Steelers find the next QB in Baker Mayfield?
Mayfield’s situation is interesting, as he demands an exchange from the Browns when they are pursuing Deshaun Watson. Cleveland refused at first, but that all changed when they traded for Watson from the Houston Texans and signed him to a five-year, $230 million, fully guaranteed contract.
A report from Jeff Howe of The Athletic indicated that Mayfield wanted to trade and play for the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts became an option when they pulled out of the Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. Now, Mayfield is currently sitting in purgatory, where fewer than a handful of teams need a starter signal caller.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported that the Browns are looking for a first pick in exchange for Mayfield. Don’t know if that will happen or not, as there are many teams in the NFL that have calculated starting midfield situations. Not only that, but Mayfield also had a bad season, when he played because of a shoulder injury that couldn’t be thrown. Hence why the Browns might decide to sever ties with Mayfield.
The Steelers are in a tough spot in the NFL Draft, as they have their 20th pick in the first round. That could put them out of the market for Malik Willis or Kenny Pickett unless they trade a huge package of draft capital for a top 10 team to drop 10 plus points to the draft table.
If Mayfield gets cut by the Browns, maybe we should keep an eye on the Steelers.
