The M1 north of Sydney was hit by heavy traffic after a serious crash on the Hawkesbury River Bridge

Several vehicles collided in a serious incident on the M1 motorway north of Sydney.

The accident at the Hawkesbury River Bridge in Mooney Mooney closed two out of three northbound lanes, according to the government’s Live Traffic NSW website.

These lanes have since been reopened, but traffic has been severely impacted.

“All northbound lanes on the Hawkesbury River Bridge have been reopened and vehicles involved in the accidents have been moved onto the shoulder of the rest area,” Live Traffic NSW said on Facebook.

“Northbound traffic is still very heavy so continue to allow for plenty of extra travel time.”
