The luxurious Melbourne penthouse could set a record with a price tag of $39 million

A new luxury penthouse is about to set a record for Melbourne’s most expensive apartment – with a staggering price tag of $39 million.

Located atop the towers called Sapphire by the Gardens on La Trobe Street in the CBD, the apartment, while still under construction, could break the record in just a few weeks.

The residence is 1200 m² and can be customized for the buyer after the official sale.

Renderings have shown what the penthouse might look like, with sky-high ceilings, a sweeping marble staircase, and a huge open-plan bathroom off the master bedroom.

The penthouse is being offered and Colliers’ agent Nancy Monitto has remained closed to the buyers but said they are local.

“We hold our cards close to our chests,” she said.

95 percent of the 325 apartments below the penthouse in Sapphire by the Gardens have already been sold.

There are a handful of two- and three-bedroom apartments still for sale in the tower, starting at $1.2 million.

The second tower will house a five-star Shangri-La hotel and a sky bridge will run between the two towers in an incredible feat of engineering.

Inside the Sky Bridge will be the hotel bar, the centerpiece of which is a transparent floor with four layers of glass, revealing a breathtaking 100 meter drop.
