“The Little Mermaid” makes $10 million in Thursday’s previews

Disney’s live-action adaptation was one of the best results ever for a Memorial Day weekend release The little mermaid grossed $10.3 million in Thursday’s previews. This is well above the $7 million that another recent live-action remake from Disney, Aladdingross in 2019. The little mermaid also generated approximately $850,000 in revenue from special screenings on Wednesday, but that number is included in Thursday’s $10.3 million. This is the seventh largest gross preview price for a film rated P or PG.


With this, The little mermaid is aiming to deliver a $120 million harvest over the extended four-day weekend, putting it at the top Aladdin, which opened with $116.8 million. This movie, directed by: Guy Richieenjoyed phenomenal success over the summer, ultimately grossing over $350 million domestically and more than $1 billion worldwide. The little mermaid also progresses Aladdin in terms of pre-sales, but behind other Disney live-action remakes such as Beauty and the Beast And The Lion King.

Directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, memories of a geisha, Mary Poppins returns), The little mermaid has received mostly positive reviews from critics, with one star Hall BaileyThe achievement was emphasized, deviations from the original were criticized. The review aggregator currently has a fresh rating of 67% Rotten tomatoes. Collider’s own Ross Bonaime in his review, called it “one of those rare live-action remakes that manages to capture the Disney magic.”

The original animated The little mermaiddirected by John Musker And Ron Clementswas released in 1989. The film grossed $211 million worldwide, well below the stellar $346 million that the animated film grossed Aladdin The animated film earned $763 million when it first aired in 1992 The Lion King was filmed in its original edition in 1994. Both films have increased their respective totals through later re-releases. Besides that, The little mermaid has enjoyed increasing popularity over the past 30 years or so and is now considered a Disney classic.


Disney’s live-action remakes have been mixed

Disney’s series of live-action remakes has had its ups and downs. For each The jungle Book And Cinderellathere is a Alice in Wonderland And Pinocchio. And then there are the (pleasant) oddities, two of them – Pete’s dragon and the youngest Peter Pan and Wendy – were directed by David Lowery. Four Disney live-action remakes – The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland – have grossed over $1 billion worldwide. The jungle Book is at the forefront with global gross sales of $966 million. It remains to be seen whether The little mermaid will rival those titles, but expectations are high considering the original is among Disney’s pinnacle.

The live-action remake also plays along Melissa McCarthy as the villainous Ursula, Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Javier Bardem, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni And Art Malik.
