The latest report makes Bob Nutting look even cheaper

Pittsburgh Pirates fans probably won’t be smitten with Bob Nutting after a recent report pointed to how the team’s paycheck appears to be covered.

Pittsburgh Pirates fans probably think their favorite team is pretty cheap. But well, you might be surprised how cheap the pirates actually are. A recent report from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette makes Bob Nutting look extraordinary and downright absurdly frugal.

According to Mark Belko’s report, the Pirates’ payroll has been “covered by ticket and concession revenue” on several occasions since 2007. That doesn’t take into account the money that comes from broadcast businesses and MLB.

This feels like an extreme case of moneyball from the pirates. Only, you know, without winning.

From an MLB franchise perspective, it’s not necessarily a bad idea for small market teams to try to keep salaries reasonable so that they can be successful for several years despite budget constraints. Teams like the Oakland Athletics and the Tampa Bay Rays are often seen as great examples of finding ways to cut costs and still achieve a lot of success and notoriety.

Pittsburgh Pirates: Recent report makes Bob Nutting look really, really cheap

But unlike the Athletics and Rays, the Pirates aren’t even remotely successful! They don’t win at all at a high level. All the pirates do is pinch pennies without finding a way to win. The Pirates finished 2021 in fifth place in the NL Central with a 61-101 record. Pittsburgh has not made the postseason since 2015.

This whole situation seems to go beyond sensible frugality and small market budget fights. This feels borderline absurd. Pittsburgh deserves to have a winning team. The Pirates should probably start investing in their roster and finding more ways to win. The latest report makes Bob Nutting look even cheaper
