The harrowing final moments of two nursing students who drowned in a sinking car in Perth’s northern suburbs have been revealed.

Best friends Nidhi Lalji Hirani and Ruxmi Premji Vaghjihani, both 20, were on their way to work when their Toyota Corolla crashed into a lake just after 6.40am near Gnangara Road in Aveley on Sunday.

Bystanders tried desperately to save the women, but it was too late.

The couple had moved to Perth from Kenya in February and were both staying with Vaghjihani’s aunt and uncle.

Her uncle, KP Halai, told 7NEWS he was awakened by a frantic call from the women asking for help, unable to open the door or smash a window. The two-minute phone call ended in tragedy.

“She said, ‘Uncle, we’re having an accident and our car is in the pond and we’re slowly drowning,’ and I said, ‘Where exactly are you?’ and I told her to try to open the door or break the glass and she said we try but it won’t open,” Halai told 7NEWS.

“As soon as I got there, I could hear them banging on the glass.”

WA Police Inspector Craig Collins said it was unclear what prompted the women to veer off the road.

“We have nothing other than what we believe no other vehicle is involved,” he said.

A witness named Singh said he was the first to notice the car sinking.

“When I stopped I could see they had tried to break the windows but they couldn’t open them,” witness Singh told 7NEWS. Unable to swim, Singh stopped other drivers to help the women.

A witness stopped and swam to the car with a wrench and tried to break the windows, but the water had risen and the car was submerged.

“I find it tragic that we couldn’t pull this off and I never expected it to end like this,” Singh said.

A vigil was held for the two friends on Sunday night, with the community vowing to help return their bodies to their families.
