HBO’s highly anticipated TV series The Last of Us released its first official trailer on Monday, giving fans a first look at the adaptation of the popular post-apocalyptic video game. The show premiered in 2023.
Just like the PlayStation video game, The Last of Us series follows a hardened survivor named Joel, played by The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal, on his journey across the United States afflicted by a deadly disease called the Cordyceps fungus became. Along the way, he travels with a young girl named Ellie, played by Game of Thrones graduate Bella Ramsey, who plays a pivotal role in finding a cure for the zombie-like plague that has devastated society.
The trailer reveal came on September 26th, which is referred to as Outbreak Day in The Last of Us community. In the original video game, the Cordyceps fungus first began spreading in the United States on September 26th.
People infected with the Cordyceps fungus turn into shambling monsters called clickers. They have mushroom-like spores that sprout from their faces and develop an insatiable taste for human flesh. The blind-sighted clickers use a creepy form of echolocation to hunt down their prey, which you can hear in HBO’s brief teaser this morning.
Alongside Pascal and Ramsey, the cast includes Gabriel Luna as Joel’s brother Tommy; Merle Dandridge as Marlene, the leader of the Fireflies rebel group; Nico Parker as Joel’s daughter Sarah, Murray Bartlett as Frank; Nick Offerman as Bill; Jeffrey Pierce as Perry; and Anna Torv as Tess. Voice actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, who played Joel and Ellie in the video games, will also appear in undisclosed roles on the show.
Neil Druckmann, co-president of video game studio Naughty Dog, will serve as co-creator and executive producer alongside Emmy-winning creator of “Chernobyl” Craig Mazin. Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan and Rose Lam are executive producers. Kantemir Balagov, Jasmila Žbanić, Ali Abbasi, Peter Hoar, Jeremy Webb and Liza Johnson are directors.
