Although Farnham, 73, has a long road to recovery ahead of him, there is reason to celebrate before Christmas.

His older son Robert, 43, announced on social media on Tuesday that he is engaged to his girlfriend Mel.

Sharing a series of pictures on Facebook, he wrote: “My best friend and the love of my life said yes to marrying me.

“I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.”

Like his famous father, Robert is a musician.

He sings for the rock band Rival Fire and also appeared in the film Queen of the Damned, based on the late Anne Rice’s famous novel.

He and younger brother James, 34, along with their mother – Farnham’s wife Jill – have gathered as Farnham continues to recover from his marathon surgery.

The news that John Farnham had cancer caused a surge of love from fans around the world.

His son’s happy engagement announcement drew many warm and congratulatory comments online.

“This is beautiful – we wish you all the luck in the world,” one person wrote on Facebook.

“You have wonderful role models for a long happy marriage together,” wrote another.

“I wish you good luck. Wonderful news that the family needed,” noted another.

In October, Robert and James provided an update on their father’s recovery.

“Thank you to everyone who took the time to write us many of these amazing messages,” Rob told A Current Affair.

“It was reassuring to know that Australia had his back,” added James.

“I know he appreciates that.

“I remember when we first told him, tears came to his eyes.

“He never expected everyone to love him anymore.

“It was nice for him to hear that, thanks everyone.”
