The genius YouTuber rebuilds his PS5 to be less than an inch wide

There will inevitably be a PS5 Slim. Not least because the current PS5 is the size and shape of a Dubai skyscraper, but because Sony always releases a thinner version of their consoles after a few years. But we’re still at least a few years away from that, which means we’ll have to turn to modern-day hero Matthew Perks from YouTube channel DIY Perks instead. Who has achieved his goal with water pumps, circular saws and an oven.
Slimmer than the current PS5 might not be the biggest challenge. So much of the width of the gargantuan machine comes from the flourishes in its case, alongside an absolutely massive power supply. Matt’s approach to the project is amazingly ambitious, replacing absolutely anything that ventures too far into three-dimensional realms with his own hacked creations.
Power delivery aside, the Sony-designed PS5 has some pretty sticky heatsinks and other cooling requirements. Given how much temperature the machine pumps out, this was clearly the most important part to replace. But since water cooling requires hefty pipes, this led Perks to the most extraordinary path of building his own handcrafted water cooling system between sheets of copper.
The more I watched this video, the more I felt like a) I’ve achieved nothing with my life and I’m a clumsy idiot who can barely tie my own shoelaces, and b) Matthew Perks is a real magician.
Just listen to him say things like, “I discovered that the original PS5 needed an ancient diamond that was only found on the top of Kilimanjaro,” and then replies to himself, “But I realized that I could replace that with a bottle cap that I turned to gold using alchemy and this plastic tube.” And all while he’s so ridiculously likeable.
Seriously, this video is quite an emotional rollercoaster ride, and while I don’t want to spoil anything, it’s a pleasure to realize that the two-month project didn’t check things out off-camera before filming.
For heaven’s sake, unless you’re also a real wizard, please don’t attempt anything like this yourself. You’ll definitely die and possibly kill others around you while you’re doing it.
