The future development of the DCEU rests on the shoulders of Henry Cavill

Historically, the flagship character of DC movies tends to be Bruce Wayne and his caped alter ego. However, his position in the DCEU is currently quite peculiar, as the future of Ben Affleck’s Batman is wide open no matter what role he plays in The Flash (and possibly Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom). Meanwhile, Robert Pattinson’s Batman does his own thing in Matt Reeves’ grounded noir world. With Affleck on his way out, it’s hard to imagine the DCEU introducing yet another bat to muddy the waters… unless they plan to do so in Joker: Folie à Deux, which is an even bigger outlier is as the Battinson universe.

With Batman’s future unclear in what currently ranks as the main DCEU timeline – and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) shying away from the lackluster Wonder Woman: 1984 (via Rotten Tomatoes) – Superman is the last remaining member of the “Big Three” of the Justice League”. Batmen come and go, but when it comes to Kal-El, a recast doesn’t really seem like an option. Despite not actively playing the role since 2017, Cavill has thoroughly immersed himself in the Superman character embodies that even unconfirmed and ultimately false whispers of his supposed appearance were enough to generate more hype than Warner Bros. actual San Diego Comic-Con panel (according to The Wrap) in 2022. It probably doesn’t hurt that Cavill during his absence of the DCEU didn’t sit on his hands, in fact, he only further reinforced his image as a “mighty hero” with his starring role as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher.

In other words, the DCEU Superman would really be, Yes, really hard to rephrase now. Still, since he’s an extremely important character who can easily anchor the universe, Cavill may very well return – or not – with greater capacity, making or breaking the near future of the DCEU.
