The former Pokemon art director unveils a new creative action game called The Plucky Squire

Devolver Digital shared a crazy presentation called Devolver Digital Marketing Countdown to Marketing as part of the ongoing Summer Game Fest 2022. In the presentation, Devolver revealed several upcoming games the studio is helping to produce. Announced games include Anger Foot, Cult of the Lamb and a quirky action-adventure called The Plucky Squire.

The Plucky Squire is being developed by a small independent studio called All Possible Futures. The small studio was co-founded by James Turner, an art director and designer best known for his work on the Pokémon games. Turner is known for his colorful and imaginative art style, which is reflected in The Plucky Squire.

The Plucky Squire blends several different genres and art styles. The announcement trailer initially shows the game as a top-down 2D dungeon crawler, similar to classic Legend of Zelda games. The main character Jot can jump out of the book they were locked in and explore the 3D world of someone’s room. Jot can interact with the desk that the book was on, teleport onto a mug, and use a jetpack to traverse the room. The game is heavily inspired by Zelda games. In addition to the top-down perspective, the trailer shows that Jot can go from 2D to 3D at will, which is a similar feature to that seen in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

James Turner began his career at Pokémon in 2010 when he was hired by Game Freak to serve as the series’ art director. As a Brit, Turner was the first Westerner to officially design Pokémon. He was the one who designed several memorable Pokemon like the Vanillite line, Golett and Golurk, Poipole and Naga Nadel, Phantump and Travenant, and the Galar Zigzax line. Turner announced that he has left Game Freak in 2022 to found All Possible Futures, with The Plucky Squire being the company’s first game.
