The finale of The Last of Us was brutal so watch the cast have fun
While The last of us‘ Haunting emotional beats and tumultuous moral themes can sometimes be fodder for a more hopeful, reparative perspective, that’s not always the case. The last of us is hard as hell, but thankfully, if the HBO series finale got you in a bad mood, the outtakes and glitches start rolling, giving us all a chance to have a little laugh — you know, before the scare us eaten once more.

If you watch the finale of The last of us, fair warning: some of these contain spoilers. But we leave big story beats for Part II out if it’s you Waiting for the second season.
Human suffering and violence are the focus The last of us. Except for limited moments in the show and games, the characters rarely smile, almost never laugh, and are constantly in a state of perpetual post-traumatic stress, pain, and/or anger. Getting the chance to catch a few amusing behind-the-scenes moments is quite an unexpected sight when we’re used to watching these actors portray characters in brutal scenarios. And honestly, I bet they need mental breaks anyway when they’re doing this shit.
That last lie… punctuated by infectious laughter
Originally posted by Pedro Pascal himself on his Instagram pageperhaps the most cathartic blooper of the last episode of the series Pascal failed to hold it together as he portrays Joel lying to Ellie about what happened in Salt Lake City, bursting out laughing and giving us all a break from this rough, rough moment of nebulous morality.
The Instagram post also includes some lovely out-of-character shots of Pascal and Bella Ramsey during the rough scene. How can you not love that?
Laura Bailey Wins ‘Funniest Lyrics Ever’ (And What That Cameo Was About)
Other unusual moments making the rounds around the internet are certainly not a deleted scene (although that would be funny) and a picture that should be now superseding our use of the Grant Gustin meme. Shared by series co-creator Neil Druckmann, who described it as “The funniest text ever‘ actress Laura Bailey, who voiced characters in both the first and second games, strikes a humorous pose over the poor dead doctor who was moments from vivifying Ellie.
Laura Bailey’s presence in the final episode has also sparked some speculation as to whether she was secretly playing the character she voices in the game’s sequel. According to Neil Druckmann further a recent episode of Kind of funnywhere he too responded to fan requests for a third gameBailey’s presence wasn’t a character reveal, it was to “honor what she did in the first game”.
As Druckmann discussed in the episode, Bailey originally voiced one of the nurses in the game’s initial release in 2013 (that role was recast in subsequent remasters and the most recent remake, as she would voice a more substantial character in the sequel). Given that Joel and Ellie’s original voice actors, Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, made memorable appearances on the show, Druckmann added that for the second season, the show will “honor the great work they did in the second game has, I think, in a different way.” So be sure to keep an eye out for Bailey in a future season of the show.
Up close with the bloater and does anyone know the brand of this sweater?
A few other interesting and humorous images taken out of context have also been doing the rounds. One contains a few shots with Marlene’s play and show actress Merle Dandridge and a costume bloater (kotaku recently interviewed Dandridge to her portrayal of Marlene). Since the Bloating appears briefly during a pretty hectic and dark action sequence in episode fivethis is a beautiful, clear and bright recording of intense costume work.
Regard: The last of us‘ Merle Dandridge on being like Marlene
Another amusing image is a seemingly harmless shot of Ellie during filming of the show’s snowy segments. A fan just wanted Do you know if anyone knew the brand of sweater Ellie was wearing?
Of course Bella Ramsey has blood all over her face after hacking up David which makes this picture kinda funny to look at and has had ever since some inspired funny photoshop.
The last of us makes for hard viewing and gaming. If you’ve had a tough emotional time weighing the intense twists and turns of the story, hopefully these moments of smiles and laughs will lighten the mood a bit.
