Ty’s family waited two weeks for the touching moment on Friday when the father of three finally opened his eyes – the first sign of hope after being placed in an induced coma.

The 32-year-old was unpacking furniture in Belmont when a car crashed into him and severed his leg.

A tourniquet from his colleague saved his life.

In an exclusive chat with 7NEWS, his sister, Tina Bickley, shared her family’s gratitude.

“Without (Ty’s staff) – we’re told – he wouldn’t be here now, so I want to say thank you to him and everyone else who was there,” she said.

Police are still investigating why he was hit.

The tragic irony is that the former tire fitter recently changed jobs because of concerns about workplace safety.

He has had three leg surgeries, is now amputated above the knee and has overcome his sepsis but is now battling pneumonia.

“It could be worse. He’s still here, that’s the main thing,” Bickley said.

The doctors are not yet sure about the severity of the father’s brain damage. He sustained three fractures to the back of his skull and a large amount of bruising to the front of his brain.

“They still say 50-50 … he can wake up from this with a full recovery, he might not wake up again,” Bickley said.

While they await answers, a GoFundMe is underway to help his young family make ends meet.

Ty was the main breadwinner for his wife Alannah and their children.

His childhood sweetheart Alannah is hoping they will celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary this month.

“Alannah just wants to say thank you for all the support she’s receiving … all the messages, she’s really grateful,” Bickley said.

The 32-year-old is considered a family improver. His family only hopes that he has the strength to repair himself.
