The Diablo IV quarterly update includes details on environment graphics and over 150 dungeons

Diablo 4 was delayed last fall, but Blizzard Entertainment appears to be hard at work on the next dungeon-crawling and loot-collecting entry in the popular RPG series. Appearing is a good word here as we just looked at several locations in the Land Sanctuary that are currently underway.

The Diablo 4 Quarterly March Update has been released and is packed with beautiful concept art. The game has “five distinct regions and hundreds of dungeons for you to experience,” according to environment art director Chris Ryder. Additionally, the team takes “a darker and more informed interpretation than previous installments”. Some of the first screenshots show a rainy village at night, a tavern lit by a lone fireplace, and a dusty town.

We also get a selection of some named locations. The Scosglen coast has settlements built to withstand the harsh weather and waves of the sea. The venerable Orbei Monastery towers high above the salt flats, though in a derelict state. A cold, forbidding military settlement, Kyovashad is not for the faint of heart. These three are featured in short videos like the one below.

A large part of the blog post is also devoted to dungeons – Diablo 4 will actually have over 150 of them. As with the Overworld locations mentioned, we also get a look at three of them. The Forgotten Places in the World video seems less about a specific location and more about a showcase for a specific tile set, but it still gives us a glimpse of dungeon delving in the upcoming game. A druid burial site called Wretched Caves and a swampy ruin called Flooded Depths are also on display. The latter specifically makes use of new “tile set transition scenes”, meaning you can run through a hole in the wall and find yourself in an entirely new, different-looking zone that’s randomly generated, like the one you just exited.

Diablo 4’s new release date hasn’t been announced yet, and Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard shouldn’t affect that one way or the other. This shouldn’t be the company’s most recent sexual harassment settlement either – the current fine won’t matter for a company of its size.
