World of Warcraft is already struggling to draw my attention to the level cap. It’s not the repetition that bothers me, but the fact that, as I shared in our last podcast episode, I’ve already gotten into the cycle of, “Awesome, I just got another drop for the same gear slot, which isn’t straight is an improvement.” Deterministic gear would fix this, but the devs seem to be looking at this concept with screams of terror and frantic traversing to clear out the demons, so…yeah, that kind of drives me less than crazy, even with a new raid – Finder Wing is open!
Some games bounce you off long before you reach the endgame, sure, and in those cases the game itself has already driven you away. But there are many ways to get a given player to happily go all the way to the level cap and engage in the gameplay there, only to still not make the top end enjoyable.
