The Daily Grind: What are the best and worst horizontal progression systems in an MMORPG?

This morning I want to talk about horizontal progression systems in MMOs, which I’m a fan of in general! And I’ll start with what I dislike the most, which is rep grinds in every single MMO. Nobody likes repeat loops. Nobody cares if the NPCs like us. They don’t even pretend to be a promotion; they are just grinds. stoppit.

My second least favorite is actually city of heroes’ Incarnated System. I didn’t particularly like it when the game was alive, although I know the rogue servers changed a lot of things I hated. The original version was super mind-bending and dramatically changed the game’s philosophy away from an alternative mid-gamer’s paradise. It might not even be fair to even call it horizontal.

As for the horizontal leveling I like? I find Guild Wars 2’s The mastery system is ideal overall, especially since it’s account-wide and never makes me feel like I’m wasting time on one character over another. I don’t like mastery levels floating over my head, but as a system itself it’s groovy.

What are the best and worst horizontal progression systems in an MMORPG?

blankEach morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online role-playing game genre. Grab a mug of your favorite drink and try to answer the question asked in today’s Daily Grind!
