The Daily Grind: Do you leave MMOs when your friends do?

MOP’s Carlo chatted about the modern endgame situation in World of Warcraft the other day and I had a sharp realization that I became a lot clearer about MMOs after I left them (or after they went under). Sometimes when you’re in an MMO you might feel like something isn’t quite right, but there’s so much thrown at you (Shine! Loot! Cosmetics! Leaderboards! Login perks! Cheevos!) to keep you in the Rod hold that you shake it off and continue on. For me, being surrounded by friends was usually enough to dispel my doubts about a game’s development and future. My desire to play with them kept me going. And when they left… I usually left too.

And then sometimes in the void after we left – or after we were pushed aside by a sunset – I could see much more clearly that the game itself couldn’t stand on its own (or that for me without my buddies it could, after all!).

What about you – do you leave MMOs when your friends do?

blankEach morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online role-playing game genre. Grab a mug of your favorite drink and try to answer the question asked in today’s Daily Grind!
