Washington’s commanders had to search extensively for a new quarterback, and one name being lightly considered was Andrew Luck.
The Washington Commanders have a clear need for quarterbacks this season, and we know how wide they searched for potential options. They ultimately opted to trade for Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz. As it turns out, they considered pursuing a retired person before moving out.
In an article by ESPN’s John KeimThe Commanders at least briefly referred to former Colts defender Andrew Luck in pre-trade chats with Wentz.
“Sometimes they even wonder: Does Andrew Luck, the retired former Colt, want to play again? That goes nowhere,” wrote Keim. “But whether it’s reality or the ‘So you’re telling me about a chance’ scenario of Christmas Lloyd, they want to make sure that every ‘I’ gets dotted.”
Commanders are said to have considered Andrew Luck before the Carson Wentz . transaction
As Keim notes in the article linked above, the thought of bringing in Luck goes nowhere. Luck was Indianapolis’s first overall pick in 2012, leading the team to the knockout stages four times and making four Pro Bowls in his seven years. But before the 2019 season, a year out of the Returning Player of the Year title, Luck withdrew from the NFL.
Apparently, it’s been quite some time since Luck hasn’t returned to the NFL. Still, at least Washington has seen him as a potential option.
The Commanders were adamantly looking for a top pick to start at the center. They are men on Russell Wilsonbut that never materialized, as the Denver Broncos were able to successfully negotiate commercial terms with the Seattle Seahawks.
In the end, Washington ended their search and called the Colts over Trade negotiations for Wentz. A deal was struck after they sent the 2022 second-round pick, the 2022 third-round pick, and the 2023 conditional third-round pick to Indianapolis in exchange for Wentz and a 2022 second-round pick. .
The commanders hope that Wentz can help lead the team back to the knockout stages and to the Super Bowl. Given the current NFC landscape, a playoff berth could be in the cards for Washington.
