The St. Louis Cardinals erupted at Nationals in Albert Pujols’ first game, scoring 29 carries in an all-out loss.
Cardinals fans know Albert Pujols’ power over a baseball team better than anyone. You could say they were reminded of that on Wednesday as the team legend celebrated his long-awaited return to action in a St. Louis jersey.
That’s because the Cardinals smashed the Nationals, scoring 29 runs against them in spring practice.
Pujols didn’t have the best game to be fair. He ended up in a double-play but still scored the first run of the game in the first inning. Then it started.

While Pujols finished 1 of 3 in his DH performances, everyone else seemed to be showing off for the old veteran.
Paul DeJong was 3-for-3 with five RBI including back-to-back homers. Yadier Molina and Josh Bell also went into the yard. Conner Capel drove in four. Alec Burleson brought home three.
Pujols is far from his prime, but he proved with the Dodgers that he can still contribute to a contender. St. Louis is hoping for a similar impact with him back in the herd. Spring training is obviously just the beginning.
Last but not least, having him in the dugout should be a boost for the roster, while also feeling like a boost for City to have him back in a Cardinals jersey.
It was all the more special for St. Louis to welcome Pujols back with this kind of show given what’s been going on in his family right now. His wife Diedre underwent surgery on Wednesday morning to remove a brain tumor.
Happily, Pujols was able to tell reporters after the game that the surgery went well.
