The Best R Rarities in Yu-Gi-Oh! master duel

While R rarity cards might not be the best cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, don’t sleep on your usefulness. In fact, all of the meta decks in Master Duel use R cards in one way or another. However, that doesn’t mean that all R cards can be scattered in a variety of decks. However, some can be used as so-called deck cards. Which R cards are the best staples in Master Duel? We have our choices, let’s go through them.

Mystical space typhoon

Let’s start with a classic from the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG: Mystical Space Typhoon. Mystical Space Typhoon (MST) is a Quick-Play Magic Card that, when activated, can destroy a Spell or Trap on the field. With many other cards now doing exactly the same thing, Typhoon has become more and more obsolete. However, it can be a nice budget card for new players, and its readily available status makes it very usable in formats that don’t allow the use of SR or UR cards.

Torrential homage

Torrential Tribute is next on the list, and this trap is a must-have card. In fact, despite its R rarity status, Torrential Tribute actually has our best Trap Card list in Yu-Gi-Oh! master duel.

Why? Pouring Tribute can burst all monsters on the field when a monster is Summoned on the field. Since it can activate during opponent’s turn, users can wait until the right time to activate it, although the conditions in the description mean that it cannot pop all monsters when an ignition effect activates. Still, it can take care of these monsters if you act fast enough.

Forbidden Chalice/Lance/Cloth

Aside from Forbidden Droplet, Yu-Gi-Oh! has several cards that are part of the “Forbidden” Spell Cards archetype. Forbidden Chalice, Lance, and Gown are all cards that have similar but not exactly the same effects. Here’s a look at all three:

  • chalice: Target 1 face-up monster on the field; until the end of this turn, that target gains 400 ATK, but its effects are negated.
  • Lance: Target 1 face-up monster on the field; until the end of this turn, that target loses 800 ATK but is unaffected by the effects of other Spells/Traps.
  • Dress: Target 1 face-up monster on the field; until the end of this turn, that target loses 600 ATK, but cannot be targeted by other card effects or destroyed.

All three work together. Chalice ends monster effects, while Lance can prevent a monster from being popped by a spell or trap. And as for Dress, this card can protect against a variety of cards. Each can help against a variety of decks. Therefore, having at least one of these cards in a deck can be very helpful.

Although Sangan was one of the original cards in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading card game, it still gets a decent amount of play. That’s because Sangan in Yu-Gi-Oh! has a simple but juicy effect. When Sangan goes from the field to the Graveyard, the owner can put a monster with 1500 or less ATK in the Deck into their hand. However, cards with that name cannot activate their effects during the turn Sangans runs out.

Since Sangan has 1000 ATK, it can be used in cooperation with Salamangreat Almiraj. It can also be used in situations where players can quickly discard it via a Synchro or Tribute Summon and then add another piece that suits Sangan’s requirements, or a useful hand trap.

book of the moon

Similar to other cards on this list, Book of Moon has a basic effect. This card can target a face-up monster on the field and flip it into face-down Defense Position. This card has a wide range of uses as it can be used against opposing monsters that have Ignition Effects and require manual activation by a player.

However, it can also be applied to the owner’s monsters. This can work with Ghostrick monsters whose effects trigger when they are face up. Decks that use flip monsters, like Subterrors, can also benefit quite a bit from Book of Moon.

cross sheep

Cross-Sheep is a Link 2 monster that has been used extensively in Master Duel. When a monster is Special Summoned to a location Cross-Sheep points to, the following effects can be applied depending on the type of card:

  • Ritual: Draw 2 cards, then discard 2 cards.
  • Merger: Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower monster from your Graveyard.
  • Synchronization: All monsters you control gain 700 ATK.
  • XYZ: All monsters your opponent controls lose 700 ATK.

This card has become very popular in Fusion-based Decks like Thunder Dragons due to Cross-Sheep’s ability to Special Summon another monster onto the field. However, other cards can also take advantage of Cross-Sheep’s effects, making it a cheap and easy turn-spreading card.

Lightning Swirl

Lightning Vortex can be considered a budget version of Raigeki or Lightning Storm. By discarding a card, it can destroy all face-up monsters on your opponent’s side of the field. Although it has a cost, it can work in Decks that contain monsters whose effects trigger in the Graveyard.

If you’re playing in a format that only allows N or R rarity cards, Lightning Vortex can be very useful. That’s especially true if you can combine it well with other cards. The Best R Rarities in Yu-Gi-Oh! master duel
