We know, it’s just spring training. But Yankees player Gerrit Cole is having a hard time adjusting to the 2022 season.
In his spring debut, Cole threw 50 throws for just 29 hits, and missed four shots, three earned, for a 5; 1 There’s a lot to like and a lot to improve on. That included Cole’s two home runs at the end of his outing.
Cole faced his former team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, on Sunday afternoon in what was expected to be an easy pairing to get things going for the Yankees ace. Instead, it is anything but.
Cole dropped out twice – once for Deigo Castillo and one for Cole Tucker. Neither player is expected to make much of an impact on the 2022 Pirates team, with Tucker being selected as a backup.
Gerrit Cole struggles, MLB Twitter gets ready
While, yes, it’s just spring training, there’s little chance of trolling a great player like Cole. As soon as he put pen to paper on a nine-year, $324 million contract in his final season with the Yankees, he became a target.
There’s more to it, as would be expected when a player as polarized as Cole does anything. Whether it’s positive, negative or anywhere in between, fans will have an opinion.
In the meantime, get this guy more spiders.
