The MLB trade deadline featured a lot of rumors about the Chicago Cubs, but fans were left disappointed in the end.

You may need a third hand to count them all Chicago Cubs rumors of the last few weeks. Considered one of the biggest trade deadline sellers, they didn’t quite live up to expectations on the MLB trade deadline.

The Cubs may be one of the bigger losers from last week’s trading deadline. By not making enough of those Cubs rumors true, fans on Chicago’s north side are feeling a little less satisfied today.

So where did the Cubs go wrong the most? These three trade deadline mistakes are why one could argue that Chicago has spent too much time twiddling its thumbs in the last 72+ hours.

1) Cubs Rumors: Not trading Willson Contreras was a huge trade deadline mistake

The Cubs had one of the hottest trade deadline candidates on their list. They still do. Willson Contreras was the clear best catcher available at the MLB close. With a lack of destinations, the Cubs’ rumors that their All-Star backstop will be dealt elsewhere will perish as myth rather than legend.

The Cubs’ mistake was perhaps asking too much. The Houston Astros took a different direction by acquiring Christian Vazquez from the Boston Red Sox. The New York Mets, another favorite to face him, ended up not adding a catcher at all.

The Cubs now have a chance to potentially extend Contreras or at least make him a qualifying offer at the end of the season. If he refuses, they can get a draft pick indemnity.

Chances are the front office thought they could design a better player than any package they could have gotten in return for Contreras. We’ll have to wait and see if that’s really the case. The 3 Biggest Trading Deadline Mistakes You Should Regret
