The 1 best (and worst) bet for UFC 278

The one best and one worst bet for UFC 278.

UFC278 will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah on Saturday with a Main Event welterweight championship bout between reigning champion Kamaru Usman and challenger Leon Edwards. The event marks the first time the UFC has returned to Salt Lake City since UFC Salt Lake City in 2016.

With a battle map full strong favorites and big underdog spotsUFC 278 offers bettors a wealth of interesting game perspectives.

Kamaru Usman (-460) is favored in the rematch against Leon Edwards (+320) at UFC 278

These two first met in a matchup in 2015, where Usman earned a unanimous decision victory over Edwards. Almost seven years later, both fighters are looking to prove that they’ve improved even more since their last fight.

Since their last fight, Usman has been on a truly dominant run. Usman has five title defenses to his name, most recently against Colby Covington at UFC 268. Originally intended as a wrestler, Usman has recently made great strides in his standup game, with three of his five title defenses coming by KO/TKO. Ahead of his five title defenses, eight of Usman’s 10 UFC wins were decided.

Edwards has been on an impressive run himself, notching up nine straight wins since his last loss to Usman. His last win came against defeated Nate Diaz at UFC 263, and although Edwards has been a less active fighter than Usman since their first fight, he’s also upped his game tremendously, picking up five rounds of Main Event experience in the process.

Best bet for UFC 278: Usman vs. Edwards over 4.5 rounds (-155)

This looks like a fight where neither fighter finds a target. Usman and Edwards have both never finished in a UFC fight. Usman is unbeaten in his UFC career, while Edwards’ only two losses both came from decisions early in his career. Edwards hasn’t defeated an opponent since 2018, and out of 14 UFC fights in his career, 10 have been decided.

Usman is notoriously durable and has a great cardio workout that pairs with a granite chin. He is a high IQ fighter and will not try to force a finish. His style is based on forward pressure that eventually wears down opponents. Now expect Usman, faced with an opponent in Edwards who has proven next to impossible to finish, to use his forward push and grip to control the fight without wasting too much energy looking for the target. Conversely, don’t expect Usman’s chin to snap against the less powerful Edwards.

Worst Bet for UFC 278: Alexandr Romanov Moneyline (-440)

The main card of UFC 278 will feature an explosive heavyweight match between undefeated Alexandr Romanov and Marcin Tybura. Romanov has finished 15 of his 16 opponents but despite an impressive start to his career, he is yet to face someone of Tybura’s caliber.

Unlike Tybura, Romanov faced a decision only once, which worries me. Against a resilient and cardio-savvy opponent like Tybura, I’m not confident he’ll be able to slow down his usual pace if the fight goes beyond the first round. There is still too much unknown about Romanov and in this adversity supporting Romanov here on the moneyline is a big no-no.
