Thanks to Dodgers, Braves are literally dodging a bullet
Joey Gallo was terrible for the Yankees in 2022, but they traded him to the Dodgers. The Braves “dodged” a giant bullet.
Just a year away from being an All-Star with the Texas Rangers and winning a Gold Glove, Joey Gallo was traded for the second straight season after a terrible season for the Yankees.
That brave was considered suitable for Gallo and they dodged a giant bullet with him.
YES Network’s Jack Curry was the one who suggested Yankees outfielder Joey Gallo might be a fit for the Braves, but now he’s going to the Dodgers.
Braves “dodged” a Dodgers ball that Joey Gallo picked up from the Yankees
Curry cited that Gallo is a better defender than Adam Duvall, who batted slightly better than Gallo overall for the season, so it could be a net win. However, Gallo was even worse offensively, which makes trading with the Dodgers even more interesting.
As of June 10, Gallo has played in 35 games (27 starts) and only scored. 102/.269/.284. In that span, he went 9-for-88 with two doubles, a triple, four homers, 11 RBI and 20 walks.
The problem with Curry’s statement was that Gallo had -3 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) in left field. In right field, Gallo has 3 DRS…but there’s no way on this planet that he would have passed Ronald Acuña Jr. in right field.
It was a good deal for the Yankees as they actually had a good prospect. They got the Dodgers No.15 prospect in the double-A pitcher Clayton Beeter. He’s on Double-A and was drafted by the Dodgers at the end of the second round. He’s struggled there this year (5.75 ERA in 18 games/16 starts). However, last year he did well in High-A as he had a 3.13 ERA in 23 games/22 starts.
From a Dodgers perspective, they might use Gallo late in games as a defensive back-up, but he’s no better defenseman than Mookie Betts (their top defenseman), but maybe he’s an option in left field since Chris Taylor is on the IL and maybe, just maybe, they can get something offensive out of him.
