Terrified neighbors call for action after 70-year-old woman murdered in northwest Baltimore – CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Many were stunned in the northwest Baltimore community where a 70-year-old woman was found shot to death repeatedly outside a row home on the 5000 block of Queensberry Avenue near Pimlico.

Bullet holes pierced the rear windows, and police closed an alleyway while they investigated.

“When you come home from work and there’s a murder happening next door, it scares you. It scares me. This is ridiculous,” the victim’s neighbor, who declined to be named, told WJZ investigator Mike Hellgren. “She never comes out. She never bothers anyone. I only see her when she takes out her trash. She will speak and go back into the house. That’s it. I can’t imagine why anyone would want to kill her. This woman doesn’t bother anyone. No one!”

Mayor Brandon Scott urged people to come forward to close this case. He spoke to Hellgren just hours after the body was discovered.

“This one really hits me. Some of my closest friends grew up on this block. I stood on this block for many days. My first thing is to the person or persons who did this: you are a coward, you are a scum and we will find you. We will hold you accountable,” the mayor said.

Police said they were called for a welfare check around 10am Thursday when they found the 70-year-old was unresponsive. Police Commissioner Michael Harrison was there when the body was removed.

“This bloc does not tolerate this type of activity against anyone, especially seniors, although this is a neighborhood that we know has had troubles over the years. I spoke to the Police Commissioner just before I came here with you and we will continue as we have done by closing 58 percent of the homicide cases this year to bring this person to justice,” Mayor Scott told Hellgren.

It’s been a violent 24 hours in Baltimore – Wednesday night five people were shot dead within an hour. These include a mass shooting at the 1900 block of N. Dukeland Street that claimed one life.

Rushern Baker, the former Prince George precinct leader who is running for governor, urged Governor Larry Hogan to declare a state of emergency over the violence.

“It is unacceptable that five shootings took place last night and no one is paying attention. They’re treating it as usual,” Baker said.
