A resourceful teenager has caught the attention of the business world and many others, by creating a Twitter account dedicated to tracking the billionaire’s comings and goings. Elon Muskown plane. In an interview with CNN’s Michael Smerconish on Saturday, he explained why he did it.
Twitter account @ElonJet run by teen Jack Sweeney and, at the time of this posting, has approximately 378,000 followers. It even inspired a cryptocurrency. It also features a number of direct messages from Musk to Sweeney.
Smerconish introduced the segment on Saturday by recounting a scene from the 1980s movie “Wall Street” as a way of illustrating Sweeney’s ingenuity. He then introduces Sweeney to talk about the account, the project, and its impact.
“Sweeney’s account, named Elon Jet, uses public records to map flights. He also watches the planes of other tycoons like Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos,” explains Smerconish. “But Musk sent Sweeney a private Twitter message, asking him to stop.”
“What was the plan when you started following Elon Musk’s Gulfstream?” Smerconish asked.
“You know, so I’m a fan of Elon and Tesla and SpaceX and everything he’s going on, and I’m just interested in where he’s going,” Sweeney said. “It was just a hobby to see what business he was in.”
Referring to Twitter exchanges between Sweeney and Musk about how much money it would take to get him to take down the account, Smerconish asked, “To be fair, though, that was never the goal, ‘Hey, I’m going to track him down and make him pay me’?”
“Yes. No, I mean, I’m a fan, I never wanted to get likes, just trying to get money out of him,” Sweeney said.
Smerconish asked about Musk’s stated concerns about the account being a security risk, and Sweeney said he’s not entirely sure it’s “true” and that Musk “just doesn’t want to be seen.” .
They talked a bit about how Musk was trying to prevent tracking and said that the information used to track the delta was “public”, although expertise is needed to compile. it this way, then back to the question of being sold out.
“So what are your current needs compared to Musk? What will make you go and put an end to this? ‘ Smerconish asked.
“U, still a Tesla, or fifty thousand dollars,” Sweeney said. “I mean, I wouldn’t raise it. It doesn’t have to be. ”
“I bet the people watching this are deciding if this is ambition, this is the American spirit, or if it’s a bit obnoxious – what would you tell them?”
“I just – it just started as a hobby, and I don’t want to give up the hobby for something that doesn’t really change my life,” he replied. “You know, that’s what I love to do and I find it really cool to do.”
But the new Tesla will change your life, says Smerconish.
“Yes, I don’t have a car right now, and it would be nice to have one and it would be a really cool car,” Sweeney replied.
Smerconish said he imagines Musk might admire Sweeney’s efforts in part, but also open up to others who would try to use him for money if he gave Sweeney a car or money. face, which Sweeney seemed to agree with.
After the interview, Smerconish read a comment on his Facebook page from a Tesla owner who pointed out that Tesla has been “following” their customers for years now, adding to Musk “Currently, How do you feel?”
“That’s funny,” Smerconish said with a smile, no doubt watched by all sorts of lurking electronics. Including Mediaite, as you can see.
