Police were called to a disturbance at a residential building in Loch Street around 11pm on Friday.

Paramedics assessed the man who suffered life-threatening injuries after an alleged attack.

He died at the scene.

The property has been declared a crime scene and police are treating his death as suspicious.

“Unfortunately, a 58-year-old man lost his life as a result of an altercation,” said Detective Acting Inspector Luke Peachey.

“Police took into custody an 18-year-old man and conducted a number of inquiries into the circumstances of his death but have now released this 18-year-old man without charge.”

The teenager is known to the late man.

Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy, which are expected to be available Monday.

“Once we have these results, we hope to be able to move further on this matter.”

The Loch Street address is not believed to be the late man’s home address.

Peachey declined to comment on whether the teenager is known to police.

Police will “remain very open” about whether the autopsy results will lead to an arrest, he said.

“The investigation is ongoing and we are of course still asking for public support regarding anyone who has CCTV or dashcam footage in this area.”

It’s “still a very active investigation,” Peachey said, and police remain suspicious of the death.

“At this point, we felt it would be best to release this individual while we conduct further investigations.”
