Technical college gets funding for construction program

DELTA, Colo. (KREX) – The Rockies Technical College just put a new major on the map. College off Highway 50 just won a grant of nearly $195k to create a new program to build.

The grant shows that the state wants to invest in the success of the TCR.

“If you look at all the different components, we want to do one class for protection, one for roofing, one for framing,” said Rockies College of Engineering director Dr. Allen. Golden revealed, “Every part of building a house, we end up with a micro-certificate. “

State funds, known as REDI, serve as a real economic development initiative and are a great platform to put this program to work.

“TCR’s new build program won’t start until this fall,” Cora Dickey reports, “In the meantime, the work in progress has time to build on the initial support. , including making this building a center of excellence.”

Prospective students will also gain experience and hands-on opportunities with Habitat for Humanity of the San Juans. CEO Erica Madison, said local contractors are thrilled the program will help high school graduates meet their first-day expectations.

“They can enter that field with the experience of helping contractors get their employer done what they need to get done right away instead of turning the workplace into a job training site,” said Erica, Director. Habitat for Humanity executive director of San Juans Madison described.

Programs and training like these are vital pieces of the puzzle about affordable housing and qualified workers – not just in Delta, but everywhere.

“It not only addresses the nonprofit side of affordable housing, but it also helps address the workforce aspect so that trained people can work for the market players,” Madison continued.

Funds are secure. plans are being worked on, the main thing missing is a program coordinator.

“The next step is to hire a program coordinator to work together between Habitat for Humanity and TCR,” shared Dr. Golden.

Madison mentions, “The perfect program coordinator will probably have a lot of experience in building,” That makes them a really good relationship builder, and they can work with both recruiters and employers. local as well as TCR staff. ”

The training courses are short-term micro-certificates that Dr. Golden says can be earned in a matter of weeks. Technical college gets funding for construction program
