Tears flow as former Melbourne star Brian Wilson is reunited with the lost Brownlow medal

Wilson, the 1982 Brownlow Medalist, had lost the medal nearly 10 years earlier and had given up hope of ever finding it again.

Melbourne remarkably – and it’s still unclear how – found the medal and stunned Wilson and his family at the pre-game event.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Wilson told 7NEWS reporter Mitch Cleary.

“It disappeared 10 years ago and was never found again.

“Melbourne Football Club, they found it for me and I can now give it to my beautiful family and leave a legacy.”

Wilson played for both Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs and thought he was invited to the event because the two clubs were playing each other.

“Then I got there and … I’m still in shock,” he said.

“It’s just an incredible privilege to now be able to give to my beautiful 24-year-old daughter and her sister.”

Wilson’s daughter Riley said she was thrilled.

“It feels incredible. As a family, we’re super lucky to have it back,” she said.

“To know how much it means to Dad, we’re just super happy to have it back.”

Wilson said he thought he would never see it again.

“It was embarrassing for me every night to be the (only Brownlow medalist) who lost his Brownlow.

“But getting it back is incredible and I sincerely thank Gary Pert and the team and everyone who turned it in.

“We have yet to figure out how we got it.”

Wilson played for the Western Bulldogs (then known as Footscray) from 1978 to 1979, North Melbourne from 1980 to 1981 and Melbourne from 1982 to 1990, finishing at St Kilda in 1991.

He was a three-time Victorian representative and retired after 209 VFL/AFL games.
