Teams from Los Osos High School in Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario Christian High School, Oak Hills High School, and Redlands High School advanced to the semifinals of the 40th annual San Bernardino County mock competition.
In the semifinals, Team Gold from Los Osos High School will face Redlands High School, and Ontario Christian High School will face Team White from Oak Hills High School.
As of January 4, the contest is scheduled to be held in person on January 12 and 13 at the San Bernardino Superior Court. The contest may change locations or move to a virtual platform if circumstances require, according to a news release.
Each team will have the opportunity to argue their case as prosecutor and defense. The two winning teams will play the final match on January 22.
28 teams from across San Bernardino County competed in virtual competition in four rounds of preliminary mock testing, ending December 8.
The mock trial competition simulates a criminal case, in which high school students play the role of attorneys and key witnesses in the courtroom, representing both the prosecution and the defense. Students present their case before a real judge and use constitutional amendments and legal objections.
This year’s case is People v Cobey – the trial of Jamie Cobey, a gardener living in the community of Burnsley, California. Cobey is accused of murdering Cobey’s landlord and next door neighbor, Erik Smith. Cobey is accused of knowingly placing a venomous snake in Smith’s mailbox, which bit Smith and resulted in his death.
Prosecutors will argue that the defendant should be found guilty of first-degree murder or a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.
The San Bernardino County Superintendent and the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office co-sponsored the county competition.
The winners of San Bernardino County will advance to the final round of the California Trials, which will take place March 18-20.
