Super Mario Bros. star Chris Pratt is getting all the hate “absolutely.”

Ever since the day Mario and Universal announced Chris Pratt would be voicing Mario for the upcoming season Super Mario Bros. Movie, the internet was in a state of shock, confusion and anger. Mostly anger. And while there are some legitimate reasons not to like Pratt or his casting, the star doesn’t seem to phase it and even says he gets it.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which hits theaters on April 5, follows New York plumbers Mario and Luigi as they wind up in the magical mushroom kingdom and become embroiled in a war against Bowser. The upcoming animated movie has a lot of hype surrounding it as we get closer to its release. And while the general reaction to the film’s trailers and marketing has been positive, fan feedback surrounding Chris Pratt as Mario has been positive significantly more negative. Pratt, it seems, attributes all of this to ardent fans who just don’t want the creators to screw up the film.

In conversation with io9 published on March 29th, Pratt was asked how he felt about the angry backlash surrounding his casting. Pratt, a man with more money than he’ll ever need and plenty of media training, responded like a pro, dodging the real reasons that had irked many and instead suggesting that people really, really cared about Mario.

“Oh, I totally understand [the criticisms and confusion]man,” said Pratt io9. “There is a passionate fan base and I am one of the fans. I get it. Most of the time, people don’t want something like that to be screwed up.”

Why Some People Really Hate Chris Pratt

The “mostly” makes quite a bit since a lot of people have been unhappy online, not just because Pratt is everywhere – in several movie franchises, including other animated movies, like The Lego Movie– or that he doesn’t seem like the right person for the role, but also because of Pratt’s past and connections to a questionable church, as we explained last year:

But why do some people really hate that Pratt is the new Hollywood face of gaming’s number one mascot? Well it probably has to do with him being accused of going to a church (Zoe Church) associated with anti-LGBTQ bigotry another church it is modeled after (Hillsong). Hillsong has been accused of engaging in gay conversion therapy and his pastor said the church does not condone a “gay lifestyle”.

“His church is notorious for being anti-LGBTQ,” Elliot Page said tweeted in 2019 when Pratt paraded his spiritual bonafides on late-night television while shrilling for The Lego Movie 2. Pratt answered saying that “nothing could be further from the truth” and that the doors of his church were open to “absolutely anyone”.

But, according to Pratt, mostly it’s just people who find the franchise “worthy.” He added: “They are careful. And for that I am grateful.”

In other news, Pratt appears to think Nintendo has released the classic Midway arcade game. counterintelligence, and he wants a movie based on it. Good luck with that, dude. The Rock tried and failed a long time ago. If you want to hear more from the world’s newest Mario, Watch the full interview io9.
