Sunrise host Shaun White’s awkward question leaves Nat Barr stunned: “Why did you bring that up?”

Sunrise consumer moderator Shaun White thought he was asking a sweet question and wanted to know how Natalie Barr’s dog Madonna is doing.
Apparently he was the only one in the studio who didn’t know the Sunrise co-host’s beloved pet passed away last year.

The question led to an awkward on-air moment when the other presenters jokingly milked Shaun’s goof.
Shaun presented a piece on Australians’ all-time high spending on their furry friends.
He went through how Aussies spent more than $33 billion on pets in 2022, with pet-friendly interiors being a growing trend.
“I am absolutely amazed at how much we are spending on these pooches and kitties. It’s bizarre,” Shaun told his colleagues.
“It’s a lot of money,” co-host David “Kochie” Koch replied.
“Well, sort of I am and I’m not (surprised)” Nat began.
“When we do a story about something that happens to a dog or a cat, people are more interested in it than they are in a human. You just do it. Do not you think?”
“You do,” Kochie told Nat, “you’re an animal lover.”
“How is Madonna?” Shaun innocently asked about Nat’s late Samoyed dog.
Nat hesitated for a moment and sadly replied, “Madonna had to be put to sleep.”
After Nat’s response, the other presenters yelled at each other, playfully teasing Shaun for the mistake.
“Oh Shaun! Why did you bring that up?” Kochie said as a look of utter panic crossed Shaun’s face.
“Oh no, Shaun,” Mark Beretta said sarcastically, while Edwina Bartholomew called out “Shaun!” tries not to laugh.
Kochie sympathetically put an arm around Nat as Shaun softly replied, “I didn’t know. I’m sorry. I don’t know what to say.”
“Didn’t you know? We had to have him put down – and Flash (Nat’s cat) we must have put down last year too,” added Nat.
“Shaun, she just got over it,” Beretts joked, adding fuel to the fire.
“It wasn’t even fake, poor Shaun didn’t even know it,” Eddy said, going to the consumer presenter’s aid.
“I’m sorry about Shaun’s name,” Kochie joked, while Nat joked, “Thanks for bringing up my dead animal.”
After Shaun apologized again, Nat reassured him that she was fine and that losing a pet is a part of life.
“We all know it’s part of nature, we all know it has to happen. I’ve come to terms with it,” she told him.
“Shaun, Shaun, Shaun,” Kochie gasped as Shaun joked, “Want to lay down, Nat?”
