As fans gear up for the highly anticipated final season of Stranger Things, the writers of Netflix’s hit sci-fi series took to Twitter to share the wild storylines that almost happened in the show’s earlier seasons.
“Crazy shit that almost happened #1: In Season 2, a possessed Will wanted to kill Bob,” the writers wrote on their verified Twitter account @strangerwriters.
Bob, played by Sean Astin, was a fan-favorite character who appeared on Season 2 of Stranger Things and dated Will’s (Noah Schnapp) mother, Joyce (Winona Ryder). At the end of the season, with them all trapped in a lab, Bob used his computer skills to help Will and Joyce escape, but in the process he was killed by a Demogorgon.
After being pulled into the Upside Down, Will becomes possessed by the Mind Flayer in Season 2. According to the series’ writers, it could have gotten even darker if a tortured Will had murdered his own father figure.
Luckily, they calm him down after his friends and family realize Will is being controlled by the Mind Flayer so the monster can’t track them down. They then embark on a mission to defeat the Mind Flayer and close the gate between Upside Down and the real world without killing Will. Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) and Joyce start a fire and turn on the heat in the room Will is stationed in, forcing the monster (who prefers cooler temperatures) to fight the heat. Finally, Nancy heats a poker in the fireplace and stabs Will with it, and the Mind Flayer exits his body in a tornado of dark smoke.
The Writers’ Room announced that they began work on the fifth and final season of Stranger Things in early August. Season 4 of Stranger Things, which premiered in two series released in May and July, became Netflix’s most-streamed English-language television season and second-most-streamed after the Korean-language phenomenon Squid Game. In addition, the season received 13 nominations at this year’s Emmy Awards, winning five.
