Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin opens up about the racist treatment he’s received from fans and how it’s impacted his popularity in the hugely successful Netflix sci-fi horror drama.
During an appearance at Heroes Comic Con in Brussels over the weekend, the actor – who has performed as Lucas Sinclair since the show began in 2016 – spoke openly about feeling like he’s being treated differently to white co-stars, including Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Sadie Sink and Noah Schnapp.
“As a younger kid, it definitely got to me. At my very first Comic-Con, some people didn’t stand in line for me because I was black,” McLaughlin said at the event, according to video footage shared by a viewer Twitter. “Some people said to me, ‘Oh, I didn’t want to be in your line because you were mean to Eleven,'” he added.
“Even now some people don’t follow me or support me because I’m black, you know,” he added. Even with 15.4 million followers on Instagram, McLaughlin remains the series star with the fewest followers out of six younger celebrity cast members on the platform.
The actor said the negativity was felt even abroad. He continued: “Sometimes abroad you can feel the racism, you can feel the bigotry. Sometimes it’s hard to talk about and people to understand, but when I was younger it definitely influenced me a lot.”
McLaughlin admitted, “It’s hard to talk about and for people to understand, but when I was younger it definitely affected me a lot,” before acknowledging how “deep” the conversation had gotten.
“See, you’re like, ‘What? Now this is an in depth conversation – why am I the least popular? why [do I have] The fewest followers? I’m on the same show as everyone else from season one,'” he told the crowd.
McLaughlin recalled what his parents had told him when he felt his skin color was affecting his career. “My parents had to say, ‘It’s a sad truth, but that’s because you’re the black kid on the show,’ and I said, ‘Wow, that’s crazy.’ Because I was born with this beautiful chocolate skin, I’m not loved,” he said.
However, the actor doesn’t focus on the racist babble, explaining, “That’s why I want to spread positivity and love with my platform because I don’t give hate back to people who hate me.”
