The fourth season of Netflix’s supernatural mystery stranger things – which has just aired its final two episodes – was famous for its length before it was even released. The season ran for nine episodes, all but one of which were over 75 minutes long. At two and a half hours, the final episode was longer than most feature films.
It won’t quite be like that for the fifth and final season of the series, showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer have now revealed. With less prep work and a story that kicks off right from the climax stranger things 4 In the new season, they expect the episodes to move faster.
“The only reason we’re not expecting that long is because this season it’s almost two hours before our kids really get sucked into a supernatural mystery,” Matt Duffer told the Happy Sad Confused Podcast. “You get to know them, you get to know them in their lives, they struggle to adjust to high school and so on, Steve tries to find a date, all of that. None of that is obviously going to happen [in season 5].
“For the first time ever, we’re not closing things at the end of 4, so it’s going to move,” he continued. “I don’t know if it’s going to be 100mph at the start of 5, but it’s going to be moving pretty quickly. Characters will already be in action. They will already have a goal and a drive and I think that will save at least a couple of hours and make this season feel really different.
For brevity, however, don’t expect the Duffers’ newfound love to stretch to the very last episode of the show, which will likely be of a similar length to the Season 4 finale. “We’re more likely to do what we’ve done here, which is just have a 2.5-hour episode,” Matt Duffer said, before (hopefully) joking that it’s the infamous spread of Peter Jackson’s third Lord of the Rings- movie would match . “I’m sure the follow-up will take a lot longer, it will return of the king-ish with about eight endings.”
However, all of this is subject to change. The Duffers told Collider that they plan to begin the writers’ room for season five in August, with actor David Harbor estimating an air date for “GQ” at “mid-2024.” There is still room for things to get out of control.
“We thought Season 4 was going to be eight [episodes], and they should be a regular length,” Matt Duffer told Collider. “So if you had interviewed us before 4, I would have said that.”
