Eddie Hearn, who promotes heavyweight contender Dillian Whyte, expects WBC world champion Tyson Fury to return to the ring in March.
And, Hearn is saying that Fury will choose Whyte as his opponent.
“I don’t believe he’s going to fight in February. Because he’s going to have the flu, as he said, and we [in] December next week. I think it’s practically March and hopefully it will be Dillian Whyte,” Hearn told IFL TV.
Fury was active last month, when he pulled through two knockdowns to score a dramatic Deontay Wilder knockdown in the eleventh round of their three-part fight.
Earlier this month, it was believed that the World Boxing Council would solidify Whyte as the mandatory challenger to Fury.
However, that did not happen as Whyte is currently engaged in a legal battle with the sanctioning agency.
“That’s why he did it. Because if he had left it to the WBC, which he did, he wouldn’t have gotten what he deserved, in my opinion. So that’s why he’s going down this path. And when this judgment is made, it’s going to be a lot more certain and clear and, yes, also favorable, we are. So that’s the reasoning behind the process. It’s just a matter of time and hopefully, there will be a verdict on that in due time,” Hearn said.
Fury personally is not interested in Whyte’s ongoing legal affairs.
He aims to fight in the first quarter of 2022 – with or without Whyte in the opposite corner.
“I thought I was going to fight Dillian Whyte but I don’t know what is going on in his private life with the WBC. He has an ongoing lawsuit and it’s a no-go because I know how long the arbitrations can take because my own arbitration with Deontay Wilder took 18 months,” Fury told IFL TV.
“I hope he doesn’t get entangled in the long grass and I hope I am not forced into another fight as a defensive voluntary. But I don’t care because they’re all just my work, I’ll destroy them all like I’ve done all my life. It doesn’t matter if it’s Dillian Whyte, Dillian Blue or Dillian Grey. I don’t mind waiting around the others, I’ll rematch in February, early March at the latest, defending my WBC heavyweight world title. “
