Steven Yeun cast in Bong Joon Ho’s next film

In a collaboration that seems tailor-made to wow Twitter, “Minari” actor Steven Yeun has been cast to star opposite Robert Pattinson in Bong Joon Ho’s next film. Although the film, set at Warner Bros., is untitled, the sci-fi story is based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7.

The project reunites Yeun and Bong, who previously collaborated on Netflix’s 2017 allegorical drama Okja.

According to the book’s publisher, St. Martin Press, the high-concept cerebral thriller could be described as “The Martian” meets “Dark Matter.” It’s about an “expendable” – a one-way operative on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world of Nifheim – who refuses to put his backup clone named Mickey 8 in his place. Details about the film’s plot have not been confirmed, and it’s not clear exactly how Bong (who also wrote the screenplay) plans to stick to the source material.

In addition to Yeun and Pattinson, the cast includes Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette and Naomi Ackie. Pattinson is set to play the protagonist, but further casting details have not yet been confirmed.

Bong will also produce the upcoming film through his company Offscreen, along with Plan B’s Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner and Kate Street Pictures’ Dooho Choi. Peter Dodd is commissioned by Warner Bros.

The film is Bong’s first feature film since 2019’s dark comedy thriller Parasite, which became the highest-grossing South Korean film in history, and the first non-English language film to win Best Picture at the Oscars. He is also known as the director of Snowpiercer, The Host and Barking Dogs Never Bite.

Yeun is next up in director Jordan Peele’s undercover thriller Nope, which co-stars Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer and hits theaters July 22 next in Netflix comedy Beef, starring Ali Wong see.
