There have been a lot of changes for the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason. And the team’s defensive coordinator will have his job cut out for him.
The Kansas City Chiefs overcame a 3-4 start in 2021 to finish 12-5 and win the AFC West for a sixth straight year. Andy Reid’s team had his troubles at times clinging to football. But the good news was that the Chiefs regained their opportunistic touch after seven sluggish weeks.
After forcing seven turnovers in the first seven games, Reid’s team had 22 takeaways in the last 10 games of the regular season. Including the playoffs, Kansas City has gone 11-2 in its last 13 contests – both losses to the Super Bowl-tied Bengals.
There have been some notable defensive departures this offseason. The list includes safeties Tyrann Mathieu and Daniel Sorensen, both of whom have signed with the Saints. Linebacker Anthony Hitchens was fired from the franchise. Cornerback Charvarius Ward signed a deal with the 49ers and defensive tackle Jarran Reed joined the Packers.
That is Quite a lot of changes for Spagnuolo’s unit. And when asked this week about the proverbial “growing pains” that come with an overhauled unit, the coordinator was pretty blunt (via Ed Easton Jr. from ChiefsWire.com)
“That’s out of the question. Yes, there will be a lot of new faces, there are youngsters, the system is new to a lot of guys, even if they’re not young. I go through an eyeball, ‘What should we do if we don’t do it all the time.’ I’m throwing a lot at them right now and they’re probably talking like that – the volume is huge right now for a reason. You know, find out who can handle it and who can’t.
“We will never go into a game with all of that. So there will be mistakes that I don’t think we would normally make. There has to be some growth within the game, so to speak. It’s going to be – we’re going to have to live with growing pains…”
That being said, Spagnuolo seems optimistic about getting through those “growing pains.” I believe that hopefully we can overcome them. But I think that’s the only way we’re going to get it where we need it. because you are right Just look at some guys need to get up and play.
