Nets sophomore guard Cam Thomas ripped it up in the Summer League and then appeared to question the authority of Brooklyn head coach Steve Nash.
Thomas was returning from an excellent Summer League outing on Sunday when a reporter asked him if Nash had encouraged him to do more.
His response became the eye roll heard throughout the NBA.
Steve Nash is disregarded by Nets Guard as a sophomore in the Summer League
Thomas hasn’t said anything particularly wrong, but the exchange could certainly be interpreted as dismissive of the coaching he’s receiving in Brooklyn.
He had 26 points and seven assists against the 76ers on Sunday, so his pass was definitely right that game. That’s after putting up 31 points and just two assists against the Bucks on Friday.
The question is whether that eye roll was a reaction to the narrative that he wasn’t sharing enough, or to the idea that Nash had told him to share more. Only Thomas can say for sure. The problem is that the video speaks for itself. It doesn’t look good at all, regardless of the meaning behind it.
Brooklyn selected Thomas late in the first round of the 2021 NBA Draft. He averaged 8.5 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists while averaging 17.6 minutes per game as a rookie. It will be interesting to see how his relationship with Nash holds up.
