Star Plus, The Walt Disney Company’s annual general entertainment and sports streaming service in the region, underscored the push towards more ambitious productions in Latin America, presenting an early banner production, “Santa Evita”, at Conecta Fiction & Entertainment in a gala Demonstration on 22.6.
Attendees at the Toledo, Spain-based forum were treated to an exclusive preview of the pilot episode of the seven-part limited series, which will air July 26 on Star Plus Latin America, Hulu in the US and Disney’s Star Label in the rest of the world.
Santa Evita anticipates more true life fiction shows being developed by Star Plus, based on larger than life figures from Latin American culture and history.
“We serve multiple markets and to connect with our audiences we develop stories about people they know, whose stories they know,” said Leonardo Aranguibel, VP, Head of Production Operations & Strategy, The Walt Disney Company Latin America , which lists projects based on Pancho Villa, a leader of the Mexican Revolution, Argentine heavyweight boxing champion Oscar “Ringo” Bonavena, and the newly announced “O Rei da TV,” a Gullane production about Silvio Santos, a Brazilian entrepreneur and media tycoon , based and TV presenter.
Another Toledo highlight, “Nada,” which can be previewed in a brief excerpt, features Robert de Niro making special appearances in the first four episodes and guest stars in five episodes.
The dramedy series from Mariano Cohn and Gaston Duprat (“The Distinguished Citizen”, “Official Competition”) centers on a prominent restaurant critic who is dependent on a woman who has served as a personal assistant, housekeeper and cook for decades. When he loses her, he hires a young woman from Paraguay, leading to a clash of cultures and generations, and ultimately some valuable life lessons. De Niro plays a renowned American writer and longtime friend who witnesses the restaurant critic’s life take this unexpected turn.
Mariana Pérez, Head of General Entertainment Productions, The Walt Disney Company Latin America, said alongside Aranguibel at the Conecta Fiction panel, “When we thought about who could play this American friend, we immediately thought of De Niro. We went to see him, sent him the scripts, he was fascinated and came to Argentina for a week; It was a wonderful experience,” Perez said, adding, “When he said yes, the script changed a bit, he collaborated on the changes to expand his character a little bit more.”
Aranguibel added, “Robert hasn’t appeared in any TV series as a character, he had a cameo on ’30 Rock’ but not as a character. It’s wonderful because it opens big doors for us with other talents, with other countries, other companies.”
Based on the best-selling book of the same name by Argentine journalist Tomás Eloy Martínez, “Santa Evita” follows the surreal fate of the embalmed body of Eva Perón, the charismatic wife of Argentine President Juan Domingo Peron, after her death in 1952. She then remained unburied for three years Years while a monument was being completed, a military coup overthrew Perón. To prevent Eva Peron’s body from becoming a symbol of the opposition, the military regime hid her embalmed body for years. “It was taken to Germany, Italy and other places before finally being returned to Peron when he came back to power,” Aranguibel said. Multiple wax copies of her body were floating around, which confused everyone even more, he added.
Developed and co-produced with Patricio Rabuffetti’s Non Stop, Santa Evita is a passion project of Mariana Pérez, Head of General Entertainment Productions, The Walt Disney Company Latin America, who previously developed the series at Fox Networks Group Latin America Disney -Fox Fusion.
Stressing that the series is not a biopic, Perez said: “The main challenge of this story is that it speaks of a global problem, of a patriarchy that can lead a military regime to confiscate a woman’s body for 16 years! “
“So they used their bodies to prove that they were in charge, that they were in power. That’s what drove me to do this story,” she continued.
“We wanted to premiere this on July 26 because it’s been 70 years since Evita Peron’s death and the opening scene of the series is her death,” Aranguibel added.
The project, which has been in the works for 10 years, received a boost when Ventanarosa’s Salma Hayek and Pepe Támez came on board as executive producers, and filmmaker Rodrigo García also served as showrunner and executive producer of the series. Argentine filmmaker, actor, theater director and screenwriter Alejandro Maci will direct five episodes, with Garcia directing the first two.
The international cast is led by Natalia Oreiro (Eva Perón), Ernesto Alterio (Moori Koenig), Darío Grandinetti (Juan Domingo Perón), Francesc Orella (Dr. Ara) and Diego Velázquez (Mariano Vázquez).
