Spelunky developer reconfirms new game UFO 50 is still under development with new screenshot

Derek Yu is perhaps best known as the developer behind the seminal indie roguelike Spelunky, as well as its similarly well-received 2020 sequel. However, that’s not all he’s been working on in recent years. Along with a handful of other indie developers of games like Downwell and Time Barons, Yu’s Studio Mossmouth has also been working on a game (or rather a collection of games) called UFO 50. And while many fans may have forgotten, Mossmouth still seems to be hard at work on the intriguing concept since the announcement in 2017.

In a Dec. 30 tweet, Yu showed a screenshot of the game in progress along with a message that read “Working on it.” The screenshot itself is more than a little difficult to analyze, although it looks like it’s some kind of puzzle game made up of a hodgepodge of different tiles and icons. Overall, the concept behind UFO 50 is a collection of 50 games from a fictional 80’s game company that was “obscure but ahead of its time”.

The game’s long-dormant Steam page mentions that UFO 50 isn’t just a collection of minigames, but entirely new games, each of which is a “complete experience with its own title screen, intro, and ending”. One of the featured games is called Campanella 2, the sequel to Campanella (also part of the collection), an action-platformer about a treasure hunter with a UFO. Another called Grimstone is a JRPG set in the American Wild West, only it’s been swallowed up by hell. Additionally, many of the games feature local multiplayer, from a pinball/golf hybrid called Pingolf to a sci-fi horse racing game called Quibble Race.
