Southern California Women’s Athlete of the Week, January 14 – San Bernardino Sun

Each week, publications from 11 Southern California News Group properties (Orange County Register, LA Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily) Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select Athletes of the Week for their respective regions.

Each athlete will then be entered into the Southern California Best Athlete vote.

Vhenus Gaoa, Los Altos: She led Los Altos to three wins last week, including two in the Hacienda League. Gaoa scored 20 points in a win from behind, 46-38 against Diamond Bar, and then scored 15 points for the top team in a 42-35 win over Rowland. On Saturday, Gaoa had 19 points in a 49-45 win over Los Alamitos. Los Altos ended up 13-1.

Jailah Donald, Serra: Donald averaged 24 points at the San Diego Holiday Prep Classic to finish 2021. Saturday, in a 59-51 win over Harvard-Westlake, Donald was charged in St. John has 27 points, nine rebounds, four assists and five steals.

Selena Martinez, Buena Park: The striker has scored 33 goals, 12 assists and 41 steals in 5 matches. She had 10 goals, six assists and eight steals to lead the Coyotes (11-6, 1-1) to their first win over Freeway League side Troy since 2001. Martinez steps week with 98 goals.

Kayla Keshmeshian, Viewpoint: The savvy senior scored 24 points in the Patriots’ massive 65-30 win over Canyon Saturday, but she also produced seven assists and racked up five rebounds in the win. Viewpoint is currently 9-4 and ranked 10th in the latest CIF-SS Division 1 poll. Keshmeshian was signed to play NCAA Division I basketball at Nicholls State University in Louisiana.

Belinda Jara Fonseca, San Jacinto: Jara Fonseca, a senior striker, played a key role in helping the Tigers win a pairing in the Mountain Pass League last week. She scored a season-high four and added two assists as San Jacinto opened the league with a 7-1 win over Perris. Jara Fonseca also proved the assist in Jaelyn Martinez’s decisive goal as the Tigers took a 1-0 lead over West Valley. Jara Fonseca leads the team with eight goals and seven assists in 14 matches.

Jennine Osorio, Millikan: The Rams frontman scored three goals and assisted two more as the top team in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 toppled Long Beach Poly, 6-3, in the Moore League. The versatile player and two-time All-Moore League pick also made eight steals as the Rams improved to 11-2.
