Heat front Caleb Martin has emerged as a regular rotation player this month, but his two-way contract could complicate his role as the season progresses, writes Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel.
The two-way player can only be active in 50 of 82 games – Martin has been active for 17 of Miami’s first 19 competitions, so if the club continues to use him regularly, he can reach his limit before the All-Star break. The easiest way to avoid that scenario is to introduce Martin to a list of 15, but Heat has yet to fill their only void due to luxury tax concerns. As Winderman notes, Martin said this week that it would be nice to land a standard contract, but he’s not worried about it yet.
“I haven’t really thought that far,” Martin said. “I will leave that to them. For them, it’s really up to them to decide when they need me or when they don’t. … Obviously that standard contract is what anyone involved in this situation is aiming for. ”
