Sora from Kingdom Hearts turned into a virtual Tamagotchi pet

What better way to celebrate twenty years? Kingdom Hearts than Tamagotchi. You remember those virtual pets, right? Of course you do. And this fall, they’re collaborating with Square Enix’s Disney-themed RPG.

I remember writing about Tamagotchi first Wired Magazine back in 2004, when infrared sensors were introduced that made virtual pet breeding possible. There’s been a Tamagotchi revival lately – Renaissance? Last year Tamagotchi Smart was introduced, a wearable smart device that picks up the toy, complete with touch and voice controls. Bandai has also reintroduced its more basic nano line and launched a number of neat collaborations, including mit Demon Hunter, evangelion and Jujutsu Kaisen.

The newest is the coming Kingdom Hearts Tamagotchi Nano. It was announced on March 28th, the 20th anniversary of the first Kingdom Hearts was released on the PlayStation 2 two decades ago.

The Anniversary Tamagotchis come in two flavors: a white, blue, and gold Light Mode version, and a black, gray, and gold Dark Mode version. Both are pretty pretty.

As you can imagine, the Kingdom Hearts iterations don’t raise your typical Tamagotchi virtual pets, they do CH Character. So far, the official website shows Sora for the Dark Mode version and Kairi for the Light Mode version. Sora, for example, will change his appearance and even transform into different characters depending on how he was raised. To do this, you need to distribute paupu fruits and take part in mini-games.

Accordingly D times, there are over twenty characters. Early pictures also tease Donald Duck and Goofy. Siliconera notes that based on the original graphics, Roxas, Xion, Axel, Aqua, Ventus, Terra, and Riku will be available, as will King Mickey.

Dark and light mode costs 2,530 yen ($20). Kingdom Hearts 20th anniversary Tamagotchis will be released in Japan this October.
