Soccer fans celebrate the 2-0 defeat

The USMNT just didn’t need to lose to Costa Rica by six goals to qualify for the World Cup. Oddly enough, this is how the fans celebrated the 0-2 defeat on Wednesday.

It was a simple formula for the USA men’s national team in terms of CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers as they headed into the away game against Costa Rica and the final qualifier on Wednesday night. If the Americans could avoid a 6-0 defeat after their hit against Panama last weekend, the USMNT would advance to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The game against Costa Rica was far from America’s best performance. They were sloppy on defense, the attacks couldn’t find their targets and things just looked a bit disjointed. However, when the final whistle blew, the United States suffered a 2-0 defeat.

And with that, the USMNT has officially secured its ticket to the Worlds after missing out on 2018.

USMNT Qualifies for Worlds: Fans Celebrate

Although it looks like a 2-0 defeat on Wednesday, the overall result is a mighty victory for the Americans with a ticket to Qatar. With that in mind, it was an odd cheer for the fans, who felt triumphant despite losing the night’s game by two goals.

Losing two goals from a clean sheet has never felt so good. But as The Ringer’s Patrick Muldowney put it perfectly, the goal of qualifying tournaments isn’t to win every match – it’s to qualify. And the United States has done its job on that, which is the most important part.

When does the 2022 World Cup start?

The 2022 World Cup kicks off in winter (in the US) in Qatar and begins this year on November 21, with knockout rounds continuing until mid-December. Above all, the final will take place on December 18th.

After missing out on 2018, this is a big moment for the United States. One could argue that this is one of the most talented sides the country has ever fielded. So it’s really special that they’re solving their cards and now have a chance to shock the world in Qatar.
